The symptoms of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) are fast with low doses (makes 10 to 15 milligrams per day) of corticosteroids (eg prednisone). The symptoms usually disappear within 24 to 48 hours. The rapid improvement with steroids is often used by doctors as a confirmation of the diagnosis of PMR. If not corrected, your doctor should any other diagnosis.

Once symptoms are under control, your doctor will reduce the dose to as little as possible to keep the symptoms at bay. Most people will continue to take steroids for one to three years, but some will continue as long as nine years or more. If the symptoms return after discontinuing the drug is a corticosteroid used again.

The anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, are not sufficient to treat PMR.

Exercise and relaxation play an important role in the treatment and recovery. Exercise helps maintain or refuel your energy and strength. The exercise also helps fight against osteoporosis and weight gaincan be achieved by administration of corticosteroids. Good forms of exercise include walking, cycling and stationary use in a pool. You also get enough rest to keep your body time to give of exercise and other activities again.
